Factor VIII
Treatment Guidelines
Treatment products may change:
read package insert. Patients with inhibitors
require special treatment.

F VIII replacement for haemophilia A, no inhibitor.

Dose depends on bleeding severity.

MINOR BLEED: 15-25 u/Kg

MAJOR BLEED: 40 u/Kg

Expected response: 1 u/Kg = 2% rise in F VIII level.

Half-life F VIII: 8-12 hr.

For serious bleeding F VIII assay may be required to monitor response to infusion.

Inhibitor assay from the Haemophilia Centre may be important to guide therapy.

The Haemophilia Treatment Centre physician chooses which product is best for each patient. Please follow recommendations.

Plasma-derived F VIII is treated with heat or solvent/detergent to inactivate viruses.

Monoclonal antibody purification is used in some concentrates. (Recombinant VIII has been licensed in RSA)

Round off dose to the nearest vial; do not discard excess F VIII. Repeat doses may be required, depending upon the severity of bleeding: always needed for major bleeds.
